Valensa International has introduced Tresalbio, a new botanical extract that allows producers of nutraceuticals, functional foods and other health-promoting products to deliver premium quality, high functional-density omega 3 fatty acids to consumers in an ingredient that addresses the efficacy, sensory and stability issues that exist with most traditional sources of omega 3s. Tresalbio is a branded Salvia hispanica seed extract (also known as “chia” seed). According to the company, Salvia hispanica extract delivers a higher concentration of omega 3 fatty acids by weight—more than 60%—than any plant (linseed/flaxseed oils) or fish source found in nature. The nature of Salvia hispanica and Valensa’s CO2 extraction process ensure product stability—contributing to longer shelf life, and reducing the incidence of rancification, thereby improving the taste and odor of the omega 3 delivering ingredient. Micro-Encapsulant & Crystal Modifier
Stepan Company Food & Health Specialties has introduced Stepan EDS (Erythritol Distearate), a shell component for use in high temperature micro-encapsulation applications. Stepan EDS, characterized as a hard waxy flake with a bland taste, features a melting point of 80 deg. C. to offer robust high temperature protection when used as a carrier in fluid bed, pan coating, annular jet and spray chill systems. When used as a component in margarine, Stepan EDS functions as a crystal modifier by promoting the formation of desirable beta crystals to aid in providing emulsion stability and enhancing texture.

Tablet Coating Systems
The Aqualon business unit of Hercules Inc., Wilmington, DE, has introduced Aquarius coating systems, a new family of dry, fully-formulated film coatings, that can enable pharmaceutical and nutritional supplement manufacturers to enhance tablet aesthetics, minimize defects, shorten coating times and reduce costs. Aquarius coating systems are formulated with high purity cellulosic polymers. The systems are available in clear, white and full color formulations. A color library of several hundred colors has been developed, and Aqualon colorists can quickly create new colors or provide custom matching. Because Aquarius coating systems are fully formulated, solutions can be prepared in only 30 minutes simply by adding to well-agitated water. Most Aquarius coating systems can be sprayed at 20% solids, which increases throughput and reduces energy and labor costs relative to conventional, lower-solids coatings.
